April 15 Application Deadline for NH Barn Tax Incentive Program

Owners of historic barns at least 75 years old have until April 15 to apply for the barn tax incentive program under RSA 79-D for the coming tax year.

RSA 79-D allows municipalities to grant property tax relief to barn owners who can demonstrate the public benefit of preserving their barns or other old farm buildings, while agreeing to maintain the structures through a minimum 10-year renewable easement.  In return, the municipality provides tax relief of 25-75% of the full assessed value of the building and the land beneath it.  More importantly, the assessment will not increase as a a result of maintenance or repair work that is performed while the easement is in effect.
